In September 2017, HELP will be releasing new EDI subscale reports for all BC school districts. EDI subscale data are complex – and different from EDI vulnerability rates. These data may raise new questions, insights and considerations about childhood development and vulnerability in your region or community. To help address emerging questions we will be creating ongoing opportunities, both in person and online, to provide guidance and support for interpreting district and neighbourhood subscale data.
In the fall we’re supporting the launch of the reports with a public webinar, 'Getting started with your Community Subscales Data’, on October 11 from 3:30-4:30pm, hosted by HELP Research Associate, Dr. Barry Forer, and the HELP team. This is an opportunity to build your understanding of EDI subscales: what they measure, how they relate to EDI scales and contribute to vulnerability rates, how to make useful comparisons. Participants will also explore approaches to interpreting and comparing local and regional subscale data, with recommendations for incorporating subscale data into community discussions.

HELP has spent the better part of 2016 wrapping up the final year of EDI Wave 6 data collection and analyzing new findings from patterns and trends across 16 years of data. Whether you’ve been working with EDI for a while and are in need of a quick refresher or you’ve recently started working with the EDI, please view this webinar ahead of the release of Wave 6 EDI School District/Community Profile Reports. This session provided an overview of the areas of children’s development measured by the tool, clarified the concept and meaning of child vulnerability and key issues related to interpreting and applying population health data.

The second in the HELP and Success by 6 Winter Webinar Series, this webinar showcased HELP’s Aboriginal-specific EDI data holdings. Joseph Dunn, Provincial Director, Success by 6 BC, and Kim Bayer, HELP's Aboriginal Community Liaison Coordinator, shared information about HELP's Aboriginal data, the role of the HELP Aboriginal Steering Committee is supporting this work, and how Aboriginal Early Years Tables across the province are working with this research data to support community planning.

HELP’s February 2015 ECD citation list is now available. The citation list includes Early Child Development academic research publications for February 2015 and pre-prints for March and beyond. This month's list includes new research publications by HELP's affiliated scholars, Michael Kobor and Joanne Weinberg. As well, there is an Australian EDI publication and a new publication from Lucy Le Mare.
Our monthly citation list is also posted to the HELP Publications page of our website. What’s the Difference? Using Critical Difference to Understand EDI Data webinar took place on January 27th 2015.
The first in the HELP and Success by 6 Winter Webinar Series, this webinar focuses on change over time - known as Critical Difference - in Early Development Instrument (EDI) scores. HELP Research Methodologist Barry Forer and HELP Geospatial Technical Lead Jay Douillard provide background and important information about Critical Difference and how to calculate it. In addition, Success by 6 Provincial Director, Joseph Dunn, was on hand to offer perspectives as an Early Years Community Development practitioner in BC.

When exploring trends in children’s development, the broad question that we want to answer is: “Are our kindergarten-aged children doing better, worse, or about the same as in the past?” HELP has developed a method that communities and stakeholder groups can use to make informed judgments about change over time in EDI scores. The method that HELP has used to examine ‘change over time’ is described in the literature as Critical Difference.
HELP has developed some new tools in an effort to make calculating Critical Difference easier. First, we have created the Critical Difference Calculator, a tool that will help with interpreting change over time and differences between EDI scores in the BC context. The calculator is easy to use – simply enter the values for each place or time and click on the Calculate button. The result will calculate automatically.
We have also developed new interactive maps of neighbourhood Critical Difference for each school district. Maps can be found here. Simply choose your school district and then click on the Critical Difference Map link found under the EDI Mapsets header.

His Holiness’ visit will focus on heart-mind well-being in children and youth in British Columbia. Central to our understanding of heart-mind well-being is the Heart-Mind Index, a research tool developed by the Dalai Lama Centre in collaboration with HELP.

HELP is pleased to announce that a new question has been added to the Early Development Instrument questionnaire. Question 11b) asks “Which Aboriginal language group does this student identify with?”.
This question is about Aboriginal identity, which is grounded in land, language and culture. It is not asking whether the student speaks or understands the language. HELP is using language to understand which Aboriginal peoples the student identifies with.
HELP anticipates two potential challenges for teachers when answering this question. First, how to know which students are Aboriginal and second, which land based language groups do the students identify with, In anticipation of these challenges, HELP has produced a short video to provide some background and helpful advice when answering this question. We also encourage teachers to contact HELP’s Aboriginal Liaison Coordinator should they have additional questions.
