Your Community Profile

EDI Community Profiles are comprehensive reports available for all of BC's 59 School Districts. A community profile explores and synthesizes EDI data aggregated for the School District and its associated neighbourhoods. These data are based on children’s home postal codes representing children who live in the School District and include children attending public schools and children attending participating Independent and on-reserve schools. This report includes multiple years of EDI data, from Wave 2 (2004-2007) to Wave 6 (2013-2016), and spatially maps EDI data at a neighbourhood-level.

Community Profiles also provide information on provincial-level results that are intended to help communities situate themselves in the broader provincial context. This year’s reports also include Neighbourhood Profiles and School District Maps for all five scales of the EDI.

Interactive Map

Interested in exploring spatial trends and patterns for school districts and neighbourhoods? HELP’s new interactive mapping tool supports the exploration of EDI data across all five scales and over multiple Waves (combined years of data). Discover EDI data for your community or region by clicking on the map to access neighbourhood-level data for this School District.

Please note:

- Data are reported based on children’s home postal codes.

- EDI data are suppressed if the number of children is 35 or less in any geographic boundary.

Explore Change Over Time

Collecting EDI data over multiple years allows us to explore trends in children’s development and to answer the broader question: “Are our Kindergarten-aged children doing better, worse or about the same as in the past?” With each new wave of EDI data, vulnerability rates change across the province. While some neighbourhoods see improvements over time for particular aspects of children’s developmental health, others see declines. When looking at all of these changes over time we need to identify the amount of change in vulnerability that is meaningful – and therefore a focus of further exploration and discussion.

HELP's interactive Critical Difference Tool allows you to explore the meaningful change over time in a neighbourhood’s vulnerability rate on any of the five EDI scales or on Vulnerability On One or More Scales. Use the map to start exploring change over time in your community by following these steps:

  1. Choose one of the five EDI scales of interest from the list below;
  2. Choose a base wave (2, 3, 4 or 5) for the first time point;
  3. Choose a comparison wave (3, 4, 5 or 6) for the second time point;
  4. Hover over individual neighbourhoods on the map to find additional details, including total number of children included in each Wave, the vulnerability rate and the change over time percentage.

For more information on how HELP calculates meaningful changes in vulnerability rates, please visit our Critical Difference webpage and calculator.
