Sustaining the Village: How Communities Grow Healthier People
2014 Human Early Learning Partnership
The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) in collaboration with the Institute for Health System Transformation & Sustainability (IHSTS) held a meeting on February 18th, 2014 in Vernon, BC to discuss opportunities for a new research project that would focus on understanding types of community supports and mobilization efforts that may help to promote healthy child development. The purpose of the meeting was to launch a larger project that could uncover information about community factors that foster healthy child development. Are there aspects of community settings, actions, and structures that contribute to differences in developmental vulnerability rates? Because this is a very broad question, we aimed to use the initial meeting to help identify the factors that coalition leaders and participants in the community thought were important to pursue based on their experiences. This report summarizes the key themes that emerged from the community meeting, with particular focus on findings pertaining to areas including and near to the North Okanagan/Shuswap and northern Kootenay school districts.
